Your work shouldn’t stand in the way of you being a great parent! We know that caring for a child comes with its curveballs, and we don’t want you to worry when your child needs you. So, here, we’ll outline what policies we have in place to support employees who are or will soon will be parents.

The scope of this sample parental leave policy

Note: This template can be used to make a parental leave policy for small businesses as well as corporations.

This policy applies to [all employees] who currently have children or growing their families. And it applies regardless of biology, adoption, marriage, or other scenarios.

What is parental leave and is it the same as paid parental leave?

Parental leave is paid time off (PTO) for expecting and new parents to spend time with a child before the child turns 18. Typically, it is used to take care of their newborn, recently adopted child, or simply provide parental care.

Our unpaid and paid parental leave policy

Our policy covers anything you may need from us regarding the care or expectancy of a child. It also includes rules for various types of leaves including but not limited to:

  • Maternity leave rules
  • Paternity leave rules
  • Adoption leave rules

[Insert this if you’re covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA): The FMLA provides eligible employees with 12-weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for the birth or adoption of a child. You are eligible for this type of leave if you have worked for us for more than 12 months and you have worked at least 1,250 hours within 12 months before your leave begins. Contact HR for more information when needed.]Our company offers [3 months] of paid maternity, paternity, and adoption leave. If local or national law stipulates longer leave, we will follow the law.If you are about to be a new mother or father (either through childbirth or adoption), talk to HR to arrange your leave. Please give us at least [3 months] notice before your leave begins.Depending on local or national law, pregnant women can take part of their leave before labor. If you suffer complications during childbirth or have other issues, you can ask for an unpaid leave extension of up to [2 months.] Contact HR as soon as possible to arrange this.
